Can You Use IPA For A Vapor Degreaser?

An IPA vapor degreaser is often used in industries requiring precise cleaning for delicate parts and components. Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is a versatile solvent that can remove oils, residues, and contaminants effectively.

However, can it be safely and efficiently used in a vapor degreaser? Here is a look at how IPA fits into vapor degreasing processes and what you need to know.

Why Use IPA in a Vapor Degreaser?

IPA is widely known for its strong cleaning abilities and fast evaporation rate. These properties make it ideal for applications where quick drying and minimal residue are important. Using IPA in a vapor degreaser allows for efficient cleaning of precision parts like electronics, medical devices, and optical components.  However, IPA is flammable with a flashpoint of about 53F and may ONLY be used in vapor degreasers that are, at minimum, designed and built to Class 1, Division 2 (C1D2) standards.  Baron Blakeslee offers C1D2 IPA equipment in our line of Airless Vacuum Vapor Degreasers (https://www.baronblakeslee.net/airless-vacuum-vapor-degreasers/).  Another major reason to use IPA in an Airless degreaser is that IPA is hygroscopic, meaning that it draws moisture from the air.  Water is infinitely soluble in IPA, and using IPA in an open top degreaser will result in constant dilution with water eventually compromising cleaning performance because the water may not be separated from the IPA.  All air, and hence moisture, is removed from the IPA in an Airless degreaser, making this technology ideally suited for this unique purpose.

Benefits of Using IPA Vapor Degreaser

  • Fast Drying: IPA evaporates quickly. This leaves parts clean and dry without additional steps.
  • Non-Residue Cleaning: It doesn’t leave behind a sticky or oily film. Therefore, parts are ready for use or further processing.
  • Safe on Delicate Materials: IPA is gentle enough for delicate surfaces, of compatible materials, and intricate parts.

How IPA Works in a Vapor Degreaser

IPA vapor degreasing involves heating the alcohol to create a vapor. Parts are suspended in the vapor zone, where the solvent condenses on their cooler surfaces.  In the Airless process, parts may also be soaked in, or sprayed with IPA, which can be filtered.  The use of ultrasonics is also possible by selecting that option, and the versatility and performance of the cleaning process thus enhanced.

The IPA dissolves and removes contaminants, which then drip away. This will leave the parts clean and dry. The method is especially effective for parts with complex geometries, as the vapor reaches into small crevices.

Applications of IPA Vapor Degreasing

  • Cleaning circuit boards and electronic components.
  • Preparing medical instruments for sterilization.
  • Removing solder flux / paste and other residues from soldered electronic assemblies.
  • Cleaning optical lenses and precision machined parts.

Considerations When Using IPA

While IPA is effective, there are some factors to keep in mind when using it in a vapor degreaser.

Flammability

IPA is flammable. This means proper equipment and safety measures are critical. Vapor degreasers designed for flammable solvents include features like closed-loop systems and explosion-proof components to minimize risks.

Temperature Control

Maintaining the right temperature is important to avoid overheating the solvent. Vapor degreasers with precise temperature controls guarantee safe and efficient operation.

Solvent Recovery

IPA can be recycled during the cleaning process, reducing waste and operating costs. Vapor degreasers with integrated recovery systems help maintain efficiency and sustainability.
